Valve: Steam







Valve Corporation (commonly referred to as Valve) is an American video game development and digital distribution company headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, United States. Founded in 1996 as “Valve Software” by former Microsoft employees Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington. It also developed and maintains the Source engine on which most of its games run, and the software distribution platform Steam, which has led to the Steam Machine, a line of pre-built gaming computers running SteamOS, this platform  is available in 25 languages.


Valve is well known for the creation of these titles:

This platform was released on several platforms such as:

  • Windows: September 12, 2003
  • Mac OS X: May 12, 2010
  • Mobile: January 26, 2012
  • Linux: February 14, 2013


With Steam only grown through out the years and have more and more members using the service with the thousands of people whom use the service every day.


Valve: Steam Logo

The Steam client was first made available for public beta testing in January 2003 during the beta period for Counter-Strike 1.6, for which it was mandatory to install and use. At the time, Steam’s primary function was streamlining the patch process common in online computer games. Steam was an optional component for all other games. 80,000–300,000 gamers tested the system when it was in its beta period. The system and website choked under the strain of thousands of users simultaneously attempting to play the latest version of Counter-Strike. In 2004, the World Opponent Network was shut down and replaced by Steam. The online features of games which required World Opponent Network ceased to work unless they were converted to Steam.

Gabe Logan Newell

Gabe Logan Newell is the co-founder and managing director of the Valve Corporation. Gabe Newell was born on November 3, 1962 and is mainly known for being the Managing director of Valve Corporation. Gabe Newell joined the began working for the Valve corporation in 1983 and is still work within the company to this day. He is nicknamed Gaben, after his work email address, His favorite games are Super Mario 64, Doom, and Star Trek played on a Burroughs mainframe computer. Doom convinced him that video games were the future of entertainment, and Super Mario 64 convinced him that video games were art.

Sony: Playstation







Sony Computer Entertainment is the Japanese company who created the famous Playstation console. Sony have up to 4 generations of their console with the first being the PS1 , The PlayStation 1 (PSX/PS1)was launched in Japan on December 3, 1994, North America on September 9, 1995, Europe on September 29, 1995, and Oceania on November 15, 1995. There next console generation was the Playstation 2 (PS2) released in March 4, 2000 worldwide, The third instalment of the console is the Playstation 3 (PS3) which had been released in Japan on November 11, 2006, the PS3 was then released in North America on November 17, 2006, With the console finally releasing in Europe and Australia in  March 23, 2007. The current instalment of the Playstation is the Playstation 4 (PS4) which released in North america on November 15, 2013, Europe on November 29, 2013 and japan on February 22, 2014.   There has been many titles that were exclusive for the Playstation in all of it years some become a well know franchise and some title become the mascot for the console for that generation of gamings, A few of these exclusive titles where:

These games were all famous and released on different generations of the playstation console, however still making a huge impact on sales, market and the audience.

The series also has a strong line-up of first-party titles due to Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, a group of fifteen first-party developers owned by Sony Computer Entertainment which are dedicated to developing first-party games for the series. In addition, the series features various budget re-releases of titles by Sony with different names for each region; these include the Greatest Hits, Platinum, Essentials, Favorites (this in Latin America) and The Best ranges of titles.

Kazuo Hirai

Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai (平井 一夫 Hirai Kazuo) is the President and CEO of Sony Corporation. He also serves as a member of the board of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony. He was noted by Entertainment Weekly as one of the most powerful executives in the entertainment industry. Hirai became the President and CEO of Sony on April 1, 2012. Kazoo Kirai was born December 22, 1960 in Tokyo Japan. Kazuo Hirai is the son of a wealthy banker, Hirai often traveled with his father across the world to California, New York, and Canada and around Japan — a trait which Hirai noted to be a major factor in his later multi-continental business success.

Andrew House

Andrew House is a Welsh businessman and the current president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, he was born on 23rd January 1965 and replaced Kaz Hirai who became chairman of the company in 2011. House started working for Sony Computer Corporation in 1990, working in the Tokyo-based corporate communications department. Five years later in 1995, he transferred to SCEI’s marketing and communications to contribute to the launch of the PlayStation gaming system. March 1996, he was promoted to Vice President of Marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), then promoted again in 2002 to Executive Vice President of SCEA.

Microsoft: XBOX







Xbox was created by an American company called Microsoft and it has 3 Instalments of Xbox. the first instalment was the original Xbox was released on November 15, 2001 in North America, February 22, 2002, in Japan, and March 14, 2002 in Australia and Europe. The Xbox 360 which was the second instalment was released on November 22, 2005, in the United States and Canada; December 2, 2005, in Europe and December 10, 2005 in Japan. The current instalment of the Xbox is the Xbox one which has been released on November 22, 2013 in North America, Brazil, Australia and some countries in Europe the other countries in Europa received the console on September 2, 2014. This console was also released in japan on September 4, 2014 and in china on September 29, 2014.   Xbox has become famous and well know for a few video game franchises that are exclusive to xbox, such as:

  • Gears of War
  • Halo
  • Fable
  • Forza Motorsport
  • Kinect Games

These are a few well know titles for the Xbox some of the exclusive titles were a huge success within the market, however some failed to catch the attention of some xbox console users.

Microsoft: Xbox Logo

The integrated Xbox Live service launched in November 2002 allowed players to play games online with or without a broadband connection. It first competed with Dreamcast’s online service but later primarily competed with PlayStation 2’s online service. Although these two are free while Xbox Live required a subscription, as well as broadband-only connection which was not completely adopted yet, Xbox Live was a success due to better servers, features such as a buddy list, and milestone titles like Halo 2 released in November 2004, which is the best-selling Xbox video game and was by far the most popular online game for years.

Phil Spencer

Phil Spencer joined Microsoft in 1988 working with Microsoft’s European developers and studios such as Lionhead Studios and Rare Ltd. Phil Spencer is the head of Microsoft’s Xbox division and leads the teams responsible for games and entertainment across the Microsoft platform. He participated in Microsoft’s E3 conferences since 2010 to the present. When Phil Spencer became the general manager of Microsoft Studios, eventually becoming the studio’s corporate vice president a year later.
